The art of designing, building and maintaining websites.: Wow this is huge topic and one that we get asked about all the time. What makes a good website? What do you think of a website? Is our site any good? These are design and usability questions. Then there is the whole area of content. Does my site read well? Does It have enough information, too much information?  Then there are structure and performance questions.  Is it quick to load? How can it edit or mange text and other content? Should I use Flash, how about video content? The list of questions goes on and on.

Our goal is to work with clients to understand the real goals of the website and does it match the goals and objectives of the company. Our skills of design, technology and business allow us to understand the objectives and present solutions that work.

We build using Open Source Content Management Systems such as Wordpress, Joomla and Concrete5.  These clever tools allow clients to edit and manage content themselves.

Counting website visitors

It is one thing to have a website, but how do you know if it is receiving visitors and what those visitors are looking at.

The answer is to install tracking code on your site and we recommend Google Analytics. This is a free service from Google, that’s easy to install and provides solid and reliable information as to what is happening on your website.

Once installed you can access a page to graphically display visitor numbers per day, where they came from – did they search for your site or type the domain in. You can see where they are located by country and town, within reason.

You can see what pages they looked at and how long they stayed on the site.

Google gives every site a quality ranking from Zero to 10. As a measure of quality the length of time people stay on the site is important as is the bounce rate, or how many people visit and then immediately leave.

Newsflash

The great beast of Redmond recently issued the latest Beta version of IE 9. It is available from the Microsoft website. We have been using it and it seems a reasonable product but still slower that using Chrome or Safari. It looks more like Google Chrome with a display of visited websites. Certainly faster that older verisons, but that is not saying a great deal.

We suggest that you download it if you want to see what Microsoft have done, but don't get that excited.

- Update - March 2011. IE 9 now on general release and seems a  very fine product. Full marks Mircosoft - Two thumbs up.
