DNS Servers and how to speed up your browsing
What is DNS?
When you request to visit an website like BBC.co.uk or TaybridgeConsulting.com your computer needs to know which server to connect you to so that it can load the site. Computers don’t know how to do this name to address translation, so they ask a specialized server to do it for them.
This specialized server is called a DNS recursive resolver. The resolver’s job is to find the address for a given name, like 126.96.36.199 for taybridgeconsuling.com, and return it to the computer that asked for it.
Computers are configured to talk to specific DNS resolvers, identified by IP address. Usually the configuration is managed by your ISP (like BT or TalkTalk or B4SH in Albury) if you’re on your home or wireless internet, and by your network administrator if you’re connected to the office internet. You can also change the configured DNS resolver your computer talks to yourself.
On a MAC see System Preferences / Networking. And visit the Advanced tab on the Network connection.
CloudFlare as a solution
We use and like the CloudFlare hosting and security services that we run with all out websites. These provide speed and safety for web browsing by using clever cache system on the edge of networks.
As well as the caching and rules CloudFlare have added a better DNS look up service. This is claimed to be faster and more secure that the one offerer as default by your ISP. To switch to CloudFlare’s 188.8.131.52. just follow these simple guidelines.
Setting up 184.108.40.206. as DNS Server
220.127.116.11 is a fast and private way to browse the internet. It is a DNS resolver – kind of like Google Maps for your computer, it translates places (like cloudflare.com) into addresses (like 2400:cb00:2048:1::c629:d7a2). 18.104.22.168 is deployed in 150+ cities worldwide, and has access to the addresses of 7M+ domain names on the same servers it runs on so it’s the fastest resolver out there.
